Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain name extension is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to register john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level domain names remained functional.
